Welcome to Toward Liberation! We are an abolitionist learning group that explores how the written word has served as a vital conduit for abolitionist dreams throughout history all the way to today.
Toward Liberation is not a traditional book club but rather a space to explore how not only books, but also other forms of the written word have been used throughout history to amplify and build abolitionist movements since the era of chattel slavery through today’s modern abolitionist movements.
Each month, we’ll feature a written work—sometimes more than one—that may be a book, poetry, short fiction, essays, narrative non-fiction, or other forms of imagining and building. When we can, we’ll look to connect written works from the past with those of today.
Throughout the month, we’ll host a few online discussions about what we’re reading. And at the end of each month, we’ll get together via Zoom to discuss what we learned, and share ideas about what we want to explore further.
Subscribe (for free) to stay up to date and get full access to our posts, discussions, and all other materials.
We look forward to being in community with you and learning together.
