What To Expect...
An abolitionist learning space where we’ll explore how the written word has uplifted and amplified abolitionist movements throughout our history and till today.
We’ll begin by sharing weekly posts, beginning next Monday, July 31, focusing on themes in Assata: An Autobiography, our inaugural summer read. And on August 28, we will host a virtual community discussion of the book. (Save the date!)
Then, beginning September 4, we will begin exploring other texts with abolitionist ideas and themes. Each month, we’ll feature a written work—sometimes more than one—that may be a book but could also include poetry, short fiction, narrative non-fiction, and other forms of storytelling. When we can, we’ll connect the abolitionist themes in historical texts with more modern examples. Our goal is to explore how the written word serves as guideposts and reminders that abolition has always been at the heart of our freedom dreams.
Throughout the month, we’ll host a few online discussions about what we’re reading, and then at the end of each month, we’ll get together via Zoom to discuss what we learned and what we hope to explore more.
We’re excited you’ve decided to join us and look forward to sharing this journey with you!
